Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital, known as Mercy Medical Center for more than a century before joining Cleveland Clinic in 2021, has been caring for Canton residents since 1908. The 476-bed Catholic-sponsored hospital at 1320 Mercy Drive NW is a Level II Trauma Center serving five counties — Stark, Carroll, Wayne, Holmes, and Tuscarawas. When my grandmother needed cardiac surgery, this is where the family took her; when my neighbor had a stroke scare last winter, this is where the ambulance went. Mercy History — A Century Plus in Canton

The Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine opened Mercy Hospital on September 24, 1908. The original hospital quickly outgrew its building and in 1911 opened a new 53-bed facility at 8th Street and North Market in Canton. Groundbreaking for Timken Mercy Hospital at the current Mercy Drive NW location began in 1953, with completion in 1957. The hospital continued expanding — adding a ten-story tower in 1970 and a $32 million renovation beginning in 1979.

In 2021, Mercy Medical Center became a full member of Cleveland Clinic while maintaining its Catholic identity through continued sponsorship by the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine. Patients kept their same physicians and providers, all operations continued uninterrupted, and accepted insurance plans stayed the same. The hospital oversees the living of its Mission and fulfillment of the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services.
