Coleman Health Services is one of the largest behavioral health providers in Stark County and across Ohio. If you or someone you know needs mental health counseling, substance use treatment, psychiatric care, or housing support, Coleman is often the first referral point. This guide covers their Canton locations, services, how to schedule care, insurance accepted, and what to expect at first appointment.

Founded in 1978 as a nonprofit community behavioral health agency, Coleman operates with a mission to serve anyone regardless of ability to pay. That mission matters in Stark County where roughly 13% of residents live below the federal poverty line and mental health resources are stretched thin. Coleman accepts Medicaid, Medicare, most commercial insurance, and offers sliding-scale fees for uninsured patients.

Services Offered at Coleman

Coleman provides a full continuum of behavioral health services across their Stark County locations:

Mental health treatment: Individual therapy, group therapy, family counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), trauma-focused therapy, and crisis intervention. They treat depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, schizophrenia, OCD, and other conditions.

Psychiatric care: Psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and ongoing psychiatric monitoring by licensed psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners. They specialize in complex cases involving multiple medications or treatment-resistant conditions.

Substance use treatment: Individual and group counseling for substance use disorders, with referrals to detox and residential programs when needed. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with buprenorphine, naltrexone, and other FDA-approved medications is available for opioid and alcohol use disorders.

Specialty programs: The FIRST program treats individuals experiencing their first psychotic episode, providing early intervention that research shows dramatically improves long-term outcomes. The FACT program focuses on fathers, providing life skills, employment support, and parenting resources.

Supportive services: Housing assistance, youth transitional services, group housing for adults, budget management classes, and employment support. These wraparound services address the social factors that often complicate mental health recovery.

How to Schedule an Appointment

New patients can start care at Coleman in one of three ways:

Call to schedule. Dial (330) 438-2400 for the Tuscarawas Street location. Intake staff will ask about your situation, insurance, and what type of service you need. Initial appointments typically happen within 2-4 weeks, though faster for urgent situations.

Walk in for same-day assessment. Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 2 PM, walk-ins are accepted at 400 Tuscarawas Street West. Bring insurance card and ID. You will complete intake paperwork and meet with an assessment clinician. Call ahead if possible to confirm walk-in availability that day.

Crisis services — no appointment needed. For mental health emergencies, go directly to Coleman Crisis Services at 624 Market Avenue North or call (330) 452-6000. This location operates 24/7. Mobile Response Teams can meet you at home, school, or any community location throughout Stark County.

What to Bring to First Appointment

Photo ID, insurance card (if applicable), list of current medications including dosages, names and contact info for any current or recent mental health providers, and a brief written summary of what you are seeking help with. Expect the first visit to run 60-90 minutes — longer than typical medical appointments because the clinician needs to understand your full situation to create an effective treatment plan.

Insurance & Payment

Coleman accepts a wide range of coverage including Ohio Medicaid (all managed care plans), Medicare, TRICARE Select, and most commercial insurance plans (Anthem, Aetna, Cigna, Humana, United Healthcare, and others). They also participate in the Access to Recovery (ATR) voucher program for uninsured patients with substance use disorders.

For patients without insurance, Coleman offers a sliding-scale fee system based on income and family size. The application is straightforward — bring recent pay stubs or tax returns. Nobody is turned away from treatment due to inability to pay. This is a core part of their nonprofit mission and is supported by grant funding from the Stark County Mental Health and Addiction Recovery Services Board.
