Stark County's population is aging. About 20% of residents are now 65 or older, and that percentage climbs every year. The services to support aging residents have expanded too — but the information is scattered across a dozen agencies, and a lot of families only discover what exists when a crisis forces them to look. My goal with this page is to put the key resources in one place before you need them urgently.

If you're a senior reading this for yourself, good on you. If you're an adult child trying to help aging parents from a distance, this is the starting point I wish more families used earlier.

Housing for Seniors

Affordable senior apartments exist throughout Stark County — Stark Metropolitan Housing Authority operates several 62+ communities with income-based rent. HUD Section 202 buildings provide subsidized housing specifically for low-income seniors. And for those wanting to age in place, SCCAA's home weatherization program and the Area Agency on Aging's PASSPORT waiver make staying at home viable even as needs increase. Full details at our senior housing guide.

Meals & Nutrition

Meals on Wheels delivers hot meals to homebound seniors — you don't have to be completely immobile to qualify, just have difficulty getting to a grocery store. CSFP (Commodity Supplemental Food Program) provides monthly food boxes for seniors with income below 130% of the poverty level. Many church-based senior lunch programs also serve free meals with no income verification. See our food assistance guide.

Healthcare & Medicare

Medicare is the default insurance at 65, but choosing between Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and supplemental plans is genuinely confusing. OSHIIP (Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program) provides free, unbiased Medicare counseling by appointment. They don't sell plans — they just help you understand your options. Call the Ohio Department of Insurance at 1-800-686-1578 to schedule.

For dental care (Medicare does NOT cover most dental work), our dental care guide lists sliding-scale clinics that accept Medicaid and low-income patients.

Mental Health for Older Adults

Depression and social isolation hit older adults disproportionately, especially after losing a spouse or after mobility loss makes social activities difficult. Mental health services at CommQuest and Coleman accept Medicare. NAMI Stark County offers peer support groups specifically for older adults dealing with depression and grief.

Transportation

When driving becomes difficult or unsafe, SARTA (Stark Area Regional Transit Authority) offers reduced-fare senior passes. Proline paratransit provides door-to-door service for seniors and people with disabilities who can't use the regular bus. The Area Agency on Aging also coordinates volunteer driver programs for medical appointments.

Fraud & Scam Prevention

Scammers target seniors with remarkable persistence. If someone calls claiming to be from the IRS, Medicare, Social Security, or "your grandson in jail" asking for money or gift cards — hang up. Report attempted scams to the Ohio Attorney General at (800) 282-0515. Our consumer rights page covers this in detail.
