I've watched people freeze at moments of crisis because they didn't know what number to call. That freeze is normal. The list above is what I'd tell you to do if we were sitting across from each other. Start with the number that fits your situation. Real humans answer all of them.

When You're Not Sure Which Number

Dial 211. It's the United Way's 24/7 helpline, and the operators are trained to listen, figure out what you need, and connect you. You don't have to explain your whole life story. "I need food" or "I need a place to stay tonight" or "I'm scared about my situation" is enough. They take it from there.

Immediate Food Needs

If you're hungry and have no money — walk into the Stark County Hunger Task Force at 408 9th St SW in Canton during business hours. They don't require an appointment. They don't require ID (though it helps). They will give you food. Full details at our food assistance page.

Nowhere to Sleep Tonight

The Stark County Homeless Hotline at (330) 452-4363 coordinates emergency shelter placement. Call between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM Monday through Friday for the most options. If you're calling after hours or on a weekend, they can often still direct you to overnight options. The Salvation Army and Refuge of Hope in Canton provide emergency beds. Families with children are prioritized for shelter placement.

Domestic Violence

The Domestic Violence Project of Stark County operates a 24/7 helpline at (330) 453-7233. They provide emergency shelter, safety planning, legal advocacy, and counseling. Everything is confidential. You don't need physical injuries to qualify for help — emotional and financial abuse count. If you're in immediate danger, call 911 first, then the DV line.

Substance Use Crisis

If you're ready to stop using — or if withdrawal is becoming medically dangerous — CommQuest at (330) 830-3393 is the primary treatment entry point in Stark County. Withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines specifically can be life-threatening; don't try to detox alone at home. Our substance recovery guide walks through all treatment options.

Mental Health Emergency

988 is the national Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Call or text — both work. Trained crisis counselors answer 24/7. For local mobile crisis response in Stark County, Child Guidance & Family Solutions at (330) 452-6000 dispatches mental health professionals to home, school, or any community setting. Full mental health guide here.

After the Emergency

Immediate crises require immediate response. But most people dealing with a crisis today will need ongoing support in the weeks and months after. Once you're safe, stable, and fed, the pillars of this site — jobs, housing, health, education, and community — help you build what comes next.
