Aultman Hospital is the heart of healthcare in Stark County. At 2600 Sixth Street SW in Canton, this 1,032-bed facility is not only the largest hospital in the county but also the single largest employer, with over 5,000 employees. Founded in 1892 by Elizabeth Harter (daughter of industrialist Cornelius Aultman), the hospital has grown from a 40-room facility to a full regional health system with Level II Trauma and Primary Stroke Center certifications. When my cousin had a heart attack three years ago, the Aultman Chest Pain Center was where paramedics took him — and the team there had him in the catheterization lab within 47 minutes. Here's what you need to know about Aultman's services, locations, and specialized programs.

- Sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body (stroke symptoms)
- Severe bleeding that won't stop
- Difficulty breathing
- Head injuries with loss of consciousness

Aultman History
In January 1890, Elizabeth Harter — daughter of Cornelius Aultman, the Canton industrialist who built the region's farm equipment empire — purchased 4.5 acres of land in southwest Canton. Two years later, on January 17, 1892, Aultman Hospital opened its doors.
The hospital expanded steadily across the 20th century: the Harter Building added 100 beds in 1925, the McKinley Building added 106 more in 1944, and the Harter Annex brought another 117 beds three years later. In 1954, the Main Building and Morrow House were completed. By the 21st century, Aultman had grown to 1,032 beds and 530 active physicians across 43 specialties, making it one of the largest community hospitals in northeast Ohio.
Aultman also established AultCare as a Preferred Provider Organization — a unique arrangement giving the hospital direct influence over insurance coverage in the region, which has helped maintain local employer networks and referral patterns.
