The Greater Stark County Urban League in collaboration with the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board of Stark County, and Community Services of Stark County, Inc is conducting “The Silent Dilemma Workshop”: Addressing the Emotional, Mental, and Physical Components of Incarceration. This workshop will take place Wednesday June 13, 2012 at the Greater Stark County Urban League located at 1400 Sherrick Rd. SE Canton, Ohio 44707 with registration starting at 8:00am.

This one day workshop will examine the emotional, mental, and physical components of incarceration and how imprisonment not only affects the ex-offenders but their families who are left behind in the midst of turmoil, pain, frustration, anger, poverty, hopelessness, lack of resources, financial difficulties and embarrassment. In an article named “ Families Left Behind: The Hidden Costs of Incarceration and Reentry, authors Travis, McBride, & Solomon state the following: Little attention has focused on how communities, social services agencies, health care providers, and the criminal justice system can work collaboratively to better meet the needs of families left behind”( Travis, J., McBride E. & Solomon, A. 2005)

In addition this workshop will aim to explore and give insight on the increasing dilemma of incarceration, reentry, rehabilitation, clinical treatment and assessment, support groups for ex-offenders, families, and children, and strategies to prevent or reduce the rate of recidivism.

Registration is $20.00 which includes lunch. The workshop will consist of three sessions. Please complete the registration form and mail in your payment no later than June 1,2012.

Siegfried Enterprises, owners of Canton area McDonald’s franchises, has provided a grant to Greater Stark County Urban League to offer qualified participants of the organization’s adult GED Program hours of paid employment. The goal of the grant is to provide financial help to program participants while they pursue their diploma.

Participants are required to put in at least 10 hours per week working on obtaining their GED. The program will then pay participants for a minimum of 10 hours of work at a local McDonald’s restaurant. Store managers have said that there will likely be more hours of work available based on participant availability and each restaurant’s needs.

“We are proud to partner with a brand as well known and respected as McDonald’s in a program as important as this. A high school diploma is the first step to a job that pays a living wage. Without it, families continue to struggle with under-employment. McDonald’s has been a first job for thousands of working adults. We hope this will improve the likelihood that those without a high school diploma will enroll in the program, complete their diploma and go on to a successful career. That’s the plan.”, said Vince Watts, President/CEO of Greater Stark County Urban League.

For more information on the program please contact the offices of Greater Stark County Urban
League. There are limited spaces available for the program and those interested should contact the
Urban League at (330)456-3479 or contact us online.

The Eisenhower Foundation has renewed a $100,000 grant to continue its full-service community school program at Hartford Middle School in the Canton City School District. Full-service community schools, built around a strong instructional core, offer a wide range of programs and services to support the physical, emotional and social grounds for children to learn. These programs and services may include extended day programs, health care, nutrition and counseling. These schools involve parents and community members to support education. In the Eisenhower Foundation model, the school partners with a lead community-based organization to provide these services or facilitate access to these services. Typically, full-service community schools are open early in the morning until late at night, weekends, and throughout the year to provide services to the students and their families.

The program in Canton has selected the Greater Stark County Urban League as its lead agency. The lead agency, in conjunction with school leadership, helps to build personnel capacity through the placement of a school-based site director. The Lead agency is accountable for fiscal development, budgetary planning, and spending justification. “The Urban League has been on-site at Hartford Middle School for years. Adding this role to the services we have traditionally provided is a natural progression in our service to the community”, said Vince Watts, President/CEO of the Greater Stark County Urban League.

“Representatives of the Eisenhower Foundation, who visited Canton and Hartford last week, were very impressed with the district, the city and Hartford School,” said Nadine McIlwain, CCS board member and local contact for the Eisenhower Foundation. As a board member of both the Canton City Schools and the Greater Stark County Urban League, “I, along with my fellow board members, encourage the collaboration with Hartford, the Eisenhower Foundation and the GSCUL,” McIlwain concluded.

The program is currently accepting proposals from community agencies to service the students and families in and around the southeast area of Canton in the areas of academics/literacy, nutrition/health, parent/community involvement, career planning, access to the arts and other community building programs and services. For more information on the program please contact the offices of the Greater Stark County Urban League at (330)456-3479.

As part of the National Urban League’s War on Unemployment, President and CEO Marc H. Morial will visit Urban League affiliates in Ohio during a national “jobs tour” to promote the League’s 12-Point Jobs Rebuild America Plan and dialogue with community members.
